April 27th! Save The Date

On Saturday April 27th we will be formally launching the Adderley Heritage Trail funded by the Heritage Lottery. Volunteers have been working hard to bring together this unique experience of Adderley’s rich history. Our history covers centuries from being a small hamlet governed by Ethelred through the Norman invasion when there was an outpost with a motte and bailey.

Adderley was a trading post on the salt trail under the auspices of the Corbet family, who were originally from Caux in France. Under the Corbets the village became a place on the Shropshire Union Canal and acquired a railway station on the Great Western Railway. At one time it even had its own gold course.

Trace the history of Adderley where warring families fought battles in the church. The village housed a hospital for WW1 soldiers and was the location for a WW2 POW camp.

Its history is marked by heroes, villains and more than one eccentric character.

Join us to celebrate the history of Adderley as compiled over the years by Geoff Butter and meet some of the villages residents from the rich past of our rural home.

11:00 in the Village Hall for the official opening followed by a light buffet and a chance to see some of the exhibits and if you’re feeling energetic (and it’s not raining) a chance to walk some of the trail.

Do you have a story you can share with us?

An important part of our project is to capture the stories and reminiscences of people who live here.  Volunteers who have been trained in taking oral histories, will capture these and the voices of the generations will be captured and held for all to enjoy on the website.

Passionate about conserving history for future generations?

Our sense of place grows from our community and from understanding the history from which our community grew. There are so many ways that you can get involved.  You certainly don’t have to be a historian!  None of us in the project team are! We are just enthusiastic about preserving this pot of Adderley gold that has been given to us.
