A Walk Through our History

Welcome to Adderley Heritage – a community run initiative created to preserve and promote the history and heritage of Adderley, Shropshire.

Content is being added to regularly by the heritage volunteers.

Explore and uncover Adderley’s rich history

Adderley Heritage was formed in 2022 to preserve the Geoff Butter Collection – a unique collection of historical documents gifted to our village and digitised by the Shropshire County Archive.

Featured items from the collection

We are bringing Adderley’s history to life with a range of projects, experiences and events, including a Heritage Trail, Oral Histories and primary school learning materials.

Adderley Heritage was formed to preserve a very special collection of materials, The Geoff Butter Collection,  which has been gifted to Adderley, detailing our history.  The group applied for Heritage Lottery Funding to create this website which has a catalogue of digital copies of all the items in the collection.  The originals are preserved at the Shropshire County Archive in Shrewsbury and can be accessed through them.  Other aspects of the project include collecting oral histories from local people, and a Heritage Trail pointing to key sites in the village.

Do you have a story you can share with us?

An important part of our project is to capture the stories and reminiscences of people who live here.  Volunteers who have been trained in taking oral histories, will capture these and the voices of the generations will be captured and held for all to enjoy on the website.

Passionate about conserving history for future generations?

Our sense of place grows from our community and from understanding the history from which our community grew. There are so many ways that you can get involved.  You certainly don’t have to be a historian!  None of us in the project team are! We are just enthusiastic about preserving this pot of Adderley gold that has been given to us.
