Remembering The US Army In Adderley

Stories To Listen To
Left: Myra Miller (Archivist with Footsteps Research and Daughter of soldier in 83rd Battalion), Centre: Mike Czyzewski Right: Tom Thomason
(sons of soldiers from the 83rd Infantry Battalion )

On 15th July 2025 Val Nash, Adderley Heritage Project, was privileged to able to interview descendants of soldiers from 331st Regiment 83rd Battalion of the US Army who were based in Adderley at the Training Camp prior to shipping to France in the D-Day landings. Our sincere thanks to Dave Nicholas a farmer from Tarporley who introduced us after meeting him last year.

We know very little about the US soldiers who were based here in 1944 but the sons and daughters of these men have travelled here to retrace their fathers footsteps. Mike Czyzewski was 14 months old when his father left USA and sadly was killed in the first wave of fighting. Tom Thomason’s and Myra Millers fathers’ returned after the war but rarely spoke of their time here and in France and Germany. If anyone reading this can add to the information we have about the Americans who were in Adderley please let us know so that it is not lost.

We have the Morning reports from the US Army records detailing the arrival and departure of the soldiers. They usually had to foot march between Adderley and Tarporley which was another training camp.

Add a Story to the Collection

An important part of our project is to capture the stories and reminiscences of people who live here.  Volunteers who have been trained in taking oral histories, will capture these and the voices of the generations will be captured and held for all to enjoy on the website.
