The timeline shows the places in history where Adderley played a role and where the community has been shaped by events and the reshaping of the landscape through the canal and railway installations.

757

Offa becomes King of Mercia .

Based around its capital, Tamworth, Mercia was one of the great seven Anglo Saxon kingdoms of England.

871 – 899

Alfred the Great reigns as King of Wessex.

He was the only English Monarch to be awarded the title Great.

1065

Adderley is held by Edric the Wild

1066 – 1087

Reign of William the Conqueror

Following the Battle of Hastings

1086

Domesday Book is published

In which the name Eldredelei [the original name of Adderley] is included

1189 – 1199

Reign of Richard 1 [The Lionheart]

Who spent only 6 months in England. He was mostly engaged in military ventures e.g. The Crusades which were funded by taxes from England.

1215 

The Great Charter or Magna Carter

As it is known is agreed by King John at Runnymede

Adderley granted a weekly market

In the 13th century Adderley was granted a weekly market on Thursdays and an annual fair on St Peter’s Day. The Normans favoured this saint and he was adopted by Adderley Church.

1255

The Corbet family arrived in Adderley

The Corbet family who arrived in Adderley originated from Brioton and Essay in Normandy

Dunstanville was lord of the Manor

Nigel (the doctor) Doussanville known locally as Dunstanville was lord of the Manor including Adderley

1337 – 1453

The Hundred Years War

The Hundred Years War between England and France

1349

Black Death

The first instance of the Black Death

1455 – 1485

The Wars of the Roses

The Wars of the Roses were fought between the House of Lancaster [red rose] and the House of York [white rose] There was a famous battle at Blore Heath

1361 – 1362

Recurrence of black death

Recurrence of black death which killed between 30 to 40 percent of the population of Europe

1492

Columbus discovers America

1509 – 1547

Reign of Henry VIII

Who had six wives of whom two he divorced, two he beheaded ,one died in childbirth and one survived him.

Estate of Sir Rowland Hill

Adderley was the estate of Sir Rowland Hill who was Lord Mayor of London in 1549

1558 – 1603

Reign of Elizabeth 1

She never married or had heirs. Her navy defeated the Spanish Armada

1605

The Gunpowder Plot

Was a failed attempt to blow up Parliament and assassinate King James 1

1635 – 1637

St Peters Church

St Peters Church Adderley was built and the tower was added in 1712

1642 – 1646

The English Civil War

Between Parliament [Roundheads] led by Oliver Cromwell and Royalists [Cavaliers] loyal to the king.The Corbets and the Needhams were on opposing sides.

1648

Second phase of the Civil War

The Second phase of the Civil War fought between May and August in a series of battles that would lead to the defeat of Charles I who was subsequently executed

1648 – 1660

England was declared a Commonwealth

Under the Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell

1660

Restoration of the Monarch

The body of Oliver Cromwell was disinterred and displayed on a pole above Westminster Hall

1665 

The Great Plague or black death recurs

And 15 per cent of the population die

1666

The Great Fire of London

Which destroyed a huge part of the city and is chronicled in the Diary of Samuel Pepys

1694

Foundation of the Bank of England

1696

Window tax introduced

Built an ornate Georgian classical style hall set in over 200 acres of partly walled park land

1765

Penny post

Was introduced to enable a national postal service

1776 

American Independence

American Declaration of Independence from Britain

1801

Current Saint Peters church was rebuilt

1805

The Battle of Trafalgar

Which resulted in the defeat of a French invasion. Admiral Lord Nelson lead the invasion but was killed by a french sniper during the battle

1824 

Raven House was built

It was at first, three separate houses, now it is one

1827

Agreement for the canal to be dug

The Trustees of the late Sir Corbet Corbet of Adderley signed an agreement for the canal to be dug through the estate

1835

Canal Opened

The Shropshire Union Canal which was of great importance to Adderley was opened

1837 – 1901

Reign of Queen Victoria begins

She ruled for 64 years during which time Britain formed a great Empire.

1863

Adderley Railway Station opened

1877

Adderley Old Hall was destroyed by Fire

1881

New Adderley Hall

Designed by Henry Reginald Corbet in the Victorian style

c1885

Raven House became a public house

Probably called The Raven Arms or Inn

1899 – 1902

The Boer War

Was fought by Britain and her Empire against the Boers in the Transvaal region of Africa

1912

Loss of the SS Titanic

1914 – 1918

World War 1

16 million people were killed

1915 

Auxiliary Military Hospital

26th of July The Red Cross convert Raven House into an Auxiliary Military Hospital for convalescing wounded soldiers.

1918

Raven House Hospital converted

In the Autumn of this year Raven house Hospital was converted for use as the Edith Cavell Home of Rest for Nurses.

1936

King Edward VIII Abdicates

King wished to marry American socialite Mrs Wallis Simpson

1939 – 1945

World War 2

During which some 55 million lives were lost

1952 – 2022

Reign of Elizabeth II

1953

Mount Everest Conquered

Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay climb Mount Everest

1955

New Adderley hall was demolished

Due to structural defects

1973

Britain joins the European Economic Community (EEC)

Along with Denmark and Ireland

1977

Queen Elizabeth’s Silver Jubilee

1982

The Falklands War

Argentina’s forces invade the British owned Falkland Islands

1989

Berlin Wall is brought down

With the collapse of Communism in Eastern Europe

2002

Queen Elizabeth’s Golden Jubilee

Britain leaves EEC

Start of the Covid Epidemic

2022

Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee

Death of Queen Elizabeth II
